The Mark hotel on the Upper East Side first opened its doors in 1927. Its modern iteration began in 2009, after a redesign spearheaded by French design guru Jacques Grange. During Fashion Week, the concentration of fashionistas goes through the roof. But even on an average day, there's a good chance you'll run into a celebrity here. Kilian Hennessy, for example, is a regular guest.

The lobby was designed in an avant-garde style: glossy, black-and-white striped floors, futuristic lighting, and lots of art. Inside the rooms and suites, it's more peaceful and classic, but even here you'll find works of contemporary art, especially conceptualist photographs and paintings. There are 100 rooms and 50 suites at The Mark. Tech junkies will love toying with the Crestron panel that controls temperature, entertainment, shades and lighting. Local bohemians have fallen in love with The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges. The hotel also has a bar, a beauty salon, and gym. Wi-Fi is included in the price of the rooms.

FYI: Rent a bicycle right at the hotel, fill a basket with delicacies from the chef, and throw a picnic in Central Park, just a block away.
