PAC has a complicated history, to say the least. Not long after opening day, it was closed again for a lengthy renovation. After reopening in 1979, the space underwent a conceptual rethink, becoming livelier and more reliant on rapidly revolving exhibitions and art-experiments.

Tragedy struck in 1993, when the mafia detonated a bomb inside, killing five and partially destroying the pavilion. Strangely enough, the damage was repaired with the help of none other than Ignazio Gardella himself, then nearing 90 years old! The pavilion was back in working order within several years, and today it's a major player in the art world. PAC doesn't just host the biggest names in contemporary art, it also carries out research and educational programs, and actively partners with the world's leading museums and galleries.
