You don’t have to be able to pronounce “Veeramakaliamman” to enjoy this extraordinary temple, an architectural marvel that will take your breath away. The Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is dedicated to the fierce (but fair) Hindu goddess Kali.

The first thing you’ll notice is the temple’s spectacular front tower, decorated with dozens of statues of Kali in her various guises. The temple was built in the late 19th century by Indian migrants. Since then, devotees to Kali have come to pay their respects and ask for her protection.

The fact: When Singapore was under bombardment during WWII, locals took refuge in the temple, and not a single person or statue was harmed.
