This restaurant in the West Village serves up contemporary Japanese cuisine. The decor and menu combine traditional sensibilities with Manhattan-style ultramodernism, offering a fresh look at Japan. Chef Abe Hiroki prepares more than the usual sushi, rolls, and sashimi. You'll also find Japanese steaks (thin strips of meat you cook yourself on a hot stone), black cod, and various dishes with fresh tofu (made in-house every 90 minutes) on the menu.

This isn't your typical Japanese restaurant. It's on the large side, with high ceilings and huge windows, and in the center of the room is a communal table decorated with Ikebana floral arrangements.

Besides the main hall there are two smaller rooms perfect for private gatherings.

We recommend: Wakame Udon; stone-grilled organic chicken; black cod. It's worth trying the various tofu salads (labeled "for vegans" on the menu).

Cuisine: Japanese

Atmosphere: trendy/relaxed

The Crowd: gourmands, creative types, fashion industry workers, famous models

FYI: The menu includes a wide selection of sake and shochu, another Japanese drink. Brunch is excellent.
