This cozy Soho cafe is the creation of husband-and-wife duo Dean and Maya Jankelowitz. Way back when, they left their native countries – South Africa and Israel, respectively – and met in the concrete jungle of Manhattan. Incidentally, they first met at good ol' Balthazar. Venturing into new territory, Dean and Maya opened this lovely cafe, serving up Mediterranean/South African cuisine with Israeli overtones. Jack's Wife Freda is famous for its amazing breakfasts and brunches. As for the name – Jack and Freda were Dean's grandparents. Trendy, small, and classically Soho, Jack's Wife Freda stands out for its warm atmosphere, homestyle menu, and, of course, the fact that it's open every day from morning until late at night. Not surprisingly, it's usually packed; you won't find a free table here on the weekends.

We recommend: For breakfast – Green Shakshuka, Rosewater waffles. For brunch – Jack's burger and zucchini chips or Greek salad with glazed, grilled fish. For desert – homemade cheesecake.

Cuisine: Mediterranean fusion

Atmosphere: lively

The Crowd: fashion bloggers, designers, architects, creative minds

FYI: If it's warm out, ask for a table on the street. There's a second Jack's Wife Freda at 50 Carmone Street.
