This trendy French bistro has been wowing even the pickiest New Yorkers since 1997. We often hear it mentioned in American movies in which the characters meet here for brunch. Naturally, the paparazzi like to stake out the entrance, waiting for their next victim. More iconic than exclusive, Balthazar has gained a well-deserved reputation over the past 10 years. And despite its outward simplicity and unpretentiousness, cultural icons from the film and fashion industries have flocked here since the very beginning.

Today they come for the same reason they always have: breakfast and brunch, high ceilings, enormous mirrors on all sides, and tables set against the walls and between columns. Where else in New York can you find that authentic Parisian spirit than in Soho!

We recommend: For breakfast — eggs Benedict, chocolate bread, and coffee, of course. For Sunday brunch — raw bar, onion soup gratinée, seafood ceviche, or eggs Florentine (with spinach and artichoke hearts).

Cuisine: contemporary French

Atmosphere: relaxed/trendy

The crowd: Everybody from celebrities and fashion models to run-of-the-mill tourists who don't understand what they're doing next to Sarah Jessica Parker and Anna Wintour.

Key info: If the host asks whether you've reserved a table, citing a full house, you'll have no choice but to charm your way in.
